Olhão & Faro

mercado de olhão

“Culture, markets & historic center"

Olhão – Today a vibrant fishing port, it was elevated to the village by King D. João VI in 1808, as a gesture of thanks for the fight against the Napoleonic troops. It was from Olhão that the boat that brought the news of the expulsion of the French to the Portuguese monarch who was a refugee in Brazil departed and that Olhão won the epithet of “Vila da Restauração"

Faro – A city rich in historical heritage whose origins date back to the 2nd Iron Age (5th-4th century BC), several peoples left their contribution to their prosperity, praticularly the Romans, Visigoths and Muslims. In 1540 the elevation of Faro to the city occurs and begins a phase of deep urban renewal during which appear the convents of Our Lady of the Assumption and San Francisco, the Customs building, the Hospital and the Church of Mercy. After the 1755 earthquake, the city undergoes a new and necessary urban renewal, highlighting the construction of Arco da Vila and the assign of some of the most interesting work of art in the municipality.
